Traveling between the red‑rock hills of Cottonwood and the expanding suburbs of Surprise means crossing the heart of central Arizona. The most direct road route follows State Route 260 east out of Cottonwood, climbs the Mogollon Rim, then joins Interstate 17 south toward the Phoenix metropolitan area. After passing the historic town of Camp Verde, the highway skirts the Verde River before merging onto I‑17 near the Black Canyon City exit. From there the drive continues through the desert foothills of Anthem and the master‑planned community of Vistancia before reaching the wide boulevards of Surprise, where neighborhoods such as Rancho Gabriela and Surprise Farms line the streets. The Surprise to Cottonwood page covers the same corridor in the opposite direction.
The door‑to‑door distance is roughly 79 miles as the crow flies, with the actual pavement adding a few extra miles. Typical travel time ranges from 108 to 148 minutes depending on traffic around the I‑17 corridor and seasonal weather on the rim
