Fastest Route: I-17 South to I-10 East (Our Usual Pick)
For most departure times, this is the route we recommend:
- Head east from the hotel toward Central Avenue, then make your way to the southbound I-17 (Black Canyon Freeway) on-ramp. Entrances to I-17 from the Midtown area are straightforward — the freeway runs north–south just west of the Central Avenue corridor.
- Take I-17 south toward downtown Phoenix. You'll pass the Tap Klakamal? — no — you'll pass familiar midtown landmarks like the Encanto neighborhood and the Steele Indian School Park area near Central and Indian School Road as you approach the downtown interchange.
- Follow signs for I-10 East toward Tucson. The I-17/I-10 downtown interchange is heavily signed; stay in the lanes marked for I-10 East.
- Exit at Sky Harbor Boulevard. Follow the clearly marked airport signage — exit signs for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are prominent and hard to miss.
- Stay on Sky Harbor Boulevard. This is the airport's main access road. Overhead signs divide traffic by destination: departures (upper level), arrivals (lower level), parking, and rental cars. Get into the correct lane early.
Alternative Route: Via SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway)
If I-10 East is congested — which happens during weekday afternoons and around downtown events — State Route 143, the Hohokam Expressway, is a solid backup. From the Midtown area, you can reach SR 143 via I-10 East briefly, or surface streets heading southeast, and SR 143 drops you right into the 44th Street and airport area. Which Terminal? Know Before You Drive
Sky Harbor currently operates two passenger terminals — Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. Terminal 2 closed to passenger traffic in early 2023, so if you flew into Phoenix years ago and remember Terminal 2, that's no longer an option. A few orientation points:
