Our Daily Schedule

What is your daily schedule?

We pick you up on your schedule 24/7. Our professional drivers are normally 5-10 minutes early at your home, or right on time at Sky Harbor. You get to pick the time we pick you up.

What is my pickup time at the airport?

We normally pick you up 30 minutes after your plane lands for domestic flights, or 45 minutes after for international flights.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup times automatically adjust to 30 minutes after you land if your flight is delayed for domestic flights, or 45 minutes after you land for international flights.

What happens if my flight arrives early?

Call or send us a text if you want us to pick you up early, and we will let your driver know that you are ready to be picked up. Otherwise, we will pick you up at the scheduled time on your reservation.

How soon should I make a reservation?

Although there is no set rule that prevents you from booking a Payson to Phoenix Shuttle last minute, it's a good idea to make your reservation as soon as possible to make sure a driver is available and prevent any delays. Heading further up Highway 260 toward Star Valley or Payson? See our Star Valley shuttle page for the same flat-rate, door-to-door 24/7 service.

How long does it take to go from Phoenix or Payson?

Trips to and from Payson in normal traffic are about an hour and 30 minutes versus about three hours on the bus or a shuttle with a bunch of people. Rush hour will normally add 15-45 minutes (30 minutes on the average).

What time should I be picked up?

3 hours before is normally enough time. PHX recommends you to be there 2 hours early to get through security and to your plane. Boarding usually starts 30 minutes before your plane takes off. However, one hour and thirty minutes is normally enough time. So if the drive from Payson to Phoenix takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, then 3 hours before your flight takes off is normally good.

Our Better Drivers

Who are your drivers?

Most of our shuttle drivers have been driving professionally with the public for more than 10 years. They have excellent people skills and are usually very knowledgeable about the area (what to do, best restaurants, history and attractions). Some of our drivers are also professional tour guides that go to the Grand Canyon and many other destinations.

We have high standards for our shuttle drivers including safety, reliability and customer service. They are very helpful with bags. They get the door for you. Everyone goes through extensive background checks with Sky Harbor in order to pick up passengers.

We also train them by driving them through PHX, explaining all the rules, and showing them where to pick people up and drop people off.

Overview of Payson to Phoenix Travel Options

Travelers moving between Payson and Phoenix have several reliable ways to cover the roughly 87‑mile stretch that separates the mountain town from the desert capital. The most common choices are personal driving, door‑to‑door shuttle services, and occasional public‑bus connections. Each method offers a different balance of travel time, convenience, and flexibility, allowing visitors to select the option that best fits their schedule and comfort preferences. Understanding the route, typical travel durations, and the services available helps make the journey smooth whether you are heading to Sky Harbor International Airport, a business meeting, or a weekend getaway in the high country.

Driving Directions and Route Details

Primary Highway Route

According to MapQuest directions, the fastest driving route begins in central Phoenix (ZIP 85003) and follows Arizona State Route 87 southbound, also known as the Beeline Highway. After traveling approximately 40 miles on SR‑87, drivers merge onto Interstate 17 northbound toward Phoenix. The combined journey covers about 87 miles and normally takes around one hour and forty‑three minutes under typical traffic conditions. The route is well‑signed, with frequent rest areas and fuel stations along SR‑87 before the transition to I‑17.

Landmarks and Points of Interest

As you leave Payson, the highway winds through the Tonto National Forest, offering views of pine‑covered ridges and the Mogollon Rim. Approaching the Valley, you pass near the town of Star Valley, a popular stop for refreshments. Continuing south on I‑17, the skyline of Phoenix gradually appears, with notable landmarks such as Encanto Park—a 222‑acre urban oasis located near downtown—and the historic site of Legend City, the former amusement park that operated from 1963 to 1983 on the border of Phoenix and Tempe. These waypoints provide useful reference marks for travelers unfamiliar with the area.

Shuttle Service Benefits

Door‑to‑Door Convenience

Airport Shuttle of Phoenix provides a dedicated door‑to‑door service between Payson and Sky Harbor International Airport. The company reports that its drivers typically arrive five to ten minutes before the scheduled pickup time at residences or hotels, and they meet passengers at the baggage claim area approximately thirty minutes after domestic flights land (forty‑five minutes for international arrivals). This schedule helps reduce waiting time and ensures a smooth transition from air travel to ground transport.

Travel Time and Flexibility

The shuttle’s estimated travel time is about one hour and thirty‑one minutes, which is slightly faster than the average driving time due to the ability to use high‑occupancy vehicle lanes and avoid certain traffic congestion points. Service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing passengers to book pickups that align with early‑morning flights or late‑night arrivals. The company also notes that its drivers have, on average, more than ten years of professional experience, contributing to a reputation for reliability and safety.

Additional Amenities

Passengers benefit from climate‑controlled vehicles, assistance with luggage, and the option to request child‑seat installations when needed. The shuttle service emphasizes a flat‑rate pricing model that eliminates surprise fees, although the exact amount is presented as an estimate that may vary based on demand or special requests. Travelers can contact the provider directly at (480) 710‑3441 or via email at airportshuttlephoenix@gmail.com for reservations and inquiries.

Public‑Transport Alternatives

While direct public‑bus routes between Payson and Phoenix are limited, regional transit options can be combined for those preferring not to drive. Greyhound and other intercity carriers occasionally schedule stops in Payson, connecting to larger hubs in Phoenix where travelers can transfer to local Valley Metro light rail or bus services. However, these alternatives typically involve longer overall travel times—often exceeding three hours—due to transfer waits and less‑direct routing. For most visitors, the shuttle or personal vehicle remains the most time‑efficient choice.

Comparison of Travel Methods

Option Estimated Travel Time* Key Advantages Considerations
Personal Vehicle ≈ 1 hour 43 minutes Full control over departure time, ability to make scenic stops, no advance booking required Responsibility for navigation, fuel costs, parking fees at destination, potential traffic delays
Door‑to‑Door Shuttle ≈ 1 hour 31 minutes Direct pickup and drop‑off, professional drivers, assistance with luggage, operates 24/7 Requires reservation, limited to scheduled pickups, cost presented as an estimate
Public Bus + Transfer > 3 hours (approx.) Lower‑cost option for budget‑conscious travelers, access to local transit networks upon arrival Multiple transfers, longer overall journey, less frequent service schedules

*Travel times are based on typical conditions reported by MapQuest and the shuttle provider; actual duration may vary with weather, traffic, or operational factors.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Journey

Timing Your Departure

If you are catching a flight, the Phoenix Sky Harbor recommendation is to arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic departure. Considering the shuttle’s average travel time of one hour and thirty‑one minutes, leaving Payson roughly three hours before your flight’s scheduled departure provides a comfortable buffer for check‑in, security, and unexpected delays. Drivers often adjust pickup times automatically for flight delays, adding an extra layer of convenience.

Packing and Preparation

Travelers should keep identification, boarding passes, and any required travel documents easily accessible. Since the route passes through higher elevations, temperatures can be cooler in Payson than in the Phoenix metro area; a light jacket or sweater is advisable, especially during early morning or evening trips. The shuttle service can accommodate strollers, ski equipment, or other bulky items with advance notice.

Staying Informed

Before departure, checking real‑time traffic updates on I‑17 and SR‑87 via a navigation app or the Arizona Department of Transportation website can help anticipate congestion, particularly during rush hour periods when delays of fifteen to forty‑five minutes are common. The shuttle company also provides live updates to passengers via text or email when significant changes to pickup times occur.

We send an airport shuttle or SUV (4+ passengers) or a nice car (1-3 passengers) anytime and take you to or from any address in Arizona, not just Sky Harbor. Our vehicles are clean and newer. Our Pickup Locations

Your Payson Shuttle picks up where it says Prearranged. If you are in a wheelchair, do not allow your attendant to leave you anywhere except Prearranged. The signs are easy to see and they are always at the outer curb. Sometimes security will send people to the wrong place, so it's better to follow the directions below. PHX also won't allow drivers to walk more than 15 feet away from their vehicle or wait, so good communication is essential. Turn on your cell phone and take it off of airplane mode, so your driver can call or text you. If you don't recognize the number, it's probably your driver.

Terminal 3 Prearranged is across the crosswalk from Door 6 and to the right, south side of the building.

Terminal 4 Prearranged is across the crosswalk from Door 3, north side of the building, first floor. The sign says "Prearranged Vehicles 3 NORTH".

Things You Should Know

Does it make sense to take an Uber or Lyft?

Uber and Lyft drivers often cancel once they arrive at your house, because the app doesn't tell them where they are going until they arrive at your home. Usually they don't want to drive that far to Payson AZ and not get paid for two hours to drive back, or they are unavailable to work for that long. This may result in you missing your flight after 2-3 of them cancel in a row, and they charge you $5 each time for the cancellation. You then try to contact Uber or Lyft over the next week to get a refund, and they don't even have a phone number.

Another thing to consider is that Uber and Lyft drivers are never interviewed, so you may get a depressed guy complaining about his life, a tiny car with no leg room or a creeper. Uber and Lyft also do not train their drivers and Sky Harbor is moderately confusing to most people, so they usually have no idea where to go.

How reliable is the Greyhound bus or an Arizona shuttle with a lot of people?

Companies that do shared rides will try to pick you up an hour or two earlier, but they make no promises about when you will actually get to PHX. If you're on a tight schedule, the shared ride option with Arizona shuttle or the Payson Greyhound is probably not a good idea. Extra stops and scheduling with other passengers can either make you too early or potentially late. Even with great drivers, passengers can be unpredictable and end up making everyone miss their flight.

Need a Payson to Phoenix shuttle? We've got you covered. We also provide transportation from Phoenix to Payson AZ, Payson to Flagstaff, Phoenix to Flagstaff, and Phoenix to Show Low.
