Driving Directions: The Main Route

  • Total distance: roughly 100 miles.
  • Major highways: AZ‑87 (south) → US‑60 (west).
  • Key interchanges: AZ‑87 / US‑60 near Mesa; US‑60 / I‑10 (just west of Tempe) for connections to Phoenix.

Scenic Stops and Points of Interest Along the Way

  • Mogollon Rim Viewpoint: Located just north of Payson, this dramatic cliff offers sweeping views of the Coconino Plateau. Pull‑off areas are well‑marked; visiting early morning provides the best light for photography.
  • Tonto Natural Bridge State Park: About 10 miles west of Payson on AZ‑87, the park showcases one of the world’s largest natural travertine bridges. A short trail leads to a vista point and interpretive signage.
  • Canyon Lake: As US‑60 descends toward the Valley, you’ll see the lake on your right. The Canyon Lake Marina offers boat rentals, picnicking, and a lakeside restaurant—ideal for a 30‑minute break.
  • Usery Mountain Regional Park: Just east of Mesa, the park features hiking trails, a desert garden, and a replica of an old‑west town. If your schedule is flexible, aim to depart before 7 am or after 7 pm for smoother flow.
  • Weekend Travel: Saturdays often bring extra traffic from Phoenix residents heading to Payson for weekend getaways. Conversely, Sunday evenings can be busy with return‑trip traffic.
  • Seasonal Considerations: Summer temperatures in the Valley can exceed 105 °F (40 °C). Ensure your vehicle’s cooling system is functional and carry extra water. Winter months may bring snow on the Mogollon Rim; check ADOT road‑condition reports before departing (source: ADOT).
  • Rest Stops: Gas stations and small markets are plentiful in Payson, Pine, and Mesa. Consider using the Valley Metro light‑rail to avoid parking hassles if you plan to explore downtown.

Cost Breakdown: What to Expect

  • Fuel: Assuming 100 mi ÷ 25 mpg = 4 gal. Before you leave, especially during winter or summer storm season, check the ADOT website or dial 511 for the latest information. Key safety points:

    • Wildlife: The highway passes through forested sections where deer and elk occasionally cross

Our Better Vehicles

What type of vehicle will pick me up?

We send a airport shuttle (4+ passengers) or a nice car (1-3 passengers) anytime and take you to or from any address in Arizona, not just PHX. Our vehicles are clean and newer. Most vehicles are luxury and full size. We have Mercedes Sprinters, Lincoln Navigators, Chrysler 300's, Lexus ES300 Hybrids, Lincoln MKZ's, and a variety of other vehicles to meet your needs.

Our Pickup Locations

Your Casa Grande shuttle picks up where it says Prearranged. If you are in a wheelchair, do not allow your attendant to leave you anywhere except Prearranged. The signs are easy to see and they are always at the outer curb. Sometimes security will send people to the wrong place, so it's better to follow the directions below. PHX also won't allow drivers to walk more than 15 feet away from their vehicle or wait, so good communication is essential. Turn on your cell phone and take it off of airplane mode, so your driver can call or text you. If you don't recognize the number, it's probably your driver.

Terminal 3 Prearranged is across the crosswalk from Door 6 and to the right, south side of the building.

Terminal 4 Prearranged is across the crosswalk from Door 3, north side of the building, first floor. The sign says "Prearranged Vehicles 3 NORTH". Planning a trip on this route? Our Payson shuttle service page has full details, fares, and booking.

Below are typical expense categories for a one‑way trip, presented as estimates to help you budget.

The Payson‑to‑Tempe corridor is dotted with natural and cultural attractions that make the drive more than just a commute.

Begin your trip in downtown Payson (intersection of AZ‑87 and US‑60). Head south on AZ‑87, a well‑maintained two‑lane highway that winds through the pines of the Mogollon Rim area. After about 30 miles you’ll pass the small communities of Pine and Strawberry, where you can stop for a coffee or a quick hike. Continue south until AZ‑87 merges with US‑60 eastbound just north of Mesa. From there, US‑60 (the Superstition Freeway) carries you west‑southwestward through Mesa and into Tempe, ending near the ASU campus and Mill Avenue district.

Whether you're heading to the Phoenix metro for work, school, or leisure, the 100‑mile corridor between Payson and Tempe offers a mix of scenic desert landscapes, historic highways, and multiple transport choices. The quickest way to reach Tempe from Payson is by car via Arizona State Route 87 (the Beeline Highway) and U.S. Route 60, a journey that typically takes 1½–2½ hours depending on traffic and weather conditions. If you prefer not to drive, a range of public‑ transit, shuttle, and rideshare options exist, each with its own cost‑and‑time trade‑offs.

Most rides fall between 89 and 123 minutes; the exact duration depends on the time of day, seasonal weather on the Beeline Highway, and any scheduled roadwork between Payson and the Valley.
