What is my pickup time at the airport?

We normally pick you up 30 minutes after your plane lands for domestic flights, or 45 minutes after for international flights.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickup times automatically adjust to 30 minutes after you land if your flight is delayed for domestic flights, or 45 minutes after you land for international flights.

What happens if my flight arrives early?

Call or send us a text if you want us to pick you up early, and we will let your driver know that you are ready to be picked up. Otherwise, we will pick you up at the scheduled time on your reservation.

How soon should I make a reservation?

Although there is no set rule that prevents you from booking a Phoenix to Cottonwood Shuttle last minute, it's a good idea to make your reservation as soon as possible to make sure a driver is available and prevent any delays.

How long does it take to go from Phoenix to Cottonwood?

Trips to and from Cottonwood in normal traffic are about 2 hours versus about 4 hours on the bus with a bunch of people. Rush hour in Phoenix will normally add 15-45 minutes (30 minutes on the average).

What time should I be picked up?

3 hours and 30 minutes before is normally enough time. PHX recommends you to be there 2 hours early to get through security and to your plane. Boarding usually starts 30 minutes before your plane takes off. However, one hour and thirty minutes is normally enough time. So if the drive from Cottonwood to Phoenix takes about 2 hours, then 3 and a half hours before your flight takes off is normally good.

Driving Distance and Time: Phoenix to Cottonwood AZ

When you plan a trip from Phoenix to Cottonwood AZ, the first thing you’ll want to know is how far it is and how long the drive will take. According to route‑planning data, the non‑stop driving time between downtown Phoenix and Cottonwood is about 1 hour 59 minutes (Source: MapQuest). The total distance along the most direct route is roughly 115 miles, although the exact mileage can vary slightly depending on your exact start and end points. If you’re traveling from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport area, add about 10–15 minutes and a few extra miles to the totals.

Because the route follows Interstate 17 (I‑17) north and then U.S. Route 89A (US‑89A) into the Verde Valley, you can expect a mix of high‑speed freeway driving and a slower, scenic two‑lane highway as you approach Cottonwood. The average speed on I‑17 is 70–75 mph, while the speed limit on US‑89A drops to 55–65 mph in places. Traffic is usually light outside of peak commute hours, but it’s wise to allow extra time during holidays or special events in the Verde Valley.

Route Overview: Which Highway to Take

The most common route from Phoenix to Cottonwood AZ is:

  • Start on I‑17 North – Take I‑17 heading north from Phoenix. This interstate runs through the Sonoran Desert and climbs into the pine‑covered highlands of central Arizona.
  • Exit at US‑89A (Exit 289) – Stay on I‑17 until you reach the interchange near Black Canyon City. Here you’ll merge onto US‑89A North.
  • Follow US‑89A North – US‑89A winds through the towns of Black Canyon City, Cordes Lakes, and Mayer before descending into the Verde Valley. The road is well‑maintained, with gentle curves and plenty of pull‑outs for scenic views.
  • Arrive in Cottonwood – US‑89A passes close to the historic downtown area, where you’ll find the Main Street corridor, local shops, and the Verde River. Turn onto AZ‑260 East if you’re heading toward Sedona or the airport.

For those who prefer a slightly longer but more picturesque drive, you can also take AZ‑260 east from US‑89A near Camp Verde and then head north to Cottonwood via the scenic byway that skirts the Prescott National Forest. This adds about 15–20 minutes but offers additional vistas of the Mogollon Rim and the Verde River.

Cost of Driving: Gas, Tolls, and Vehicle Wear

If you’re budgeting for a road‑trip, the estimated cost of gasoline for the Phoenix‑to‑Cottonwood drive is around $18.01 (calculated using an average U.S. regular‑gas price of $4.35 per gallon). This estimate assumes a mid‑size sedan that averages 25 mpg on the combined highway/city route. You can fine‑tune this figure by checking current local gas prices at stations along I‑17 (e.g., in Black Canyon City or Camp Verde) using tools like GasBuddy.

Beyond fuel, the trip’s environmental impact is worth noting. The average car emits about 81.10 pounds of CO₂ for the entire one‑way trip, which translates to roughly 0.79 pounds of CO₂ per mile (Source: Distance‑Cities.com). If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint, consider car‑pooling or using a fuel‑efficient hybrid/electric vehicle, as these can cut emissions significantly.

Currently, there are no tolls on I‑17 or US‑89A, so the only direct costs are fuel and any incidental expenses (snacks, coffee, etc.). Data shows that Black Canyon City sits roughly 46 miles north of Phoenix and 58 miles south of Cottonwood, making it about a 45‑minute drive from Phoenix and a 56‑minute drive from Cottonwood (Source: MapQuest). This small community offers a handful of convenient services:

  • Fuel stations – A Chevron and a small independent station provide gasoline and basic automotive supplies.
  • Quick bites – A couple of local diners and a coffee shop serve simple, hearty meals.
  • Scenic pull‑outs – The area is known for its historic bridges and desert landscapes, perfect for a quick photo stop.

Because Black Canyon City lies at the edge of the Coconino National Forest, you’ll also find a small picnic area with restrooms. It’s an ideal spot to regroup before continuing north into the more mountainous terrain toward Cottonwood.

Sky Harbor also won't allow drivers to walk more than 15 feet away from their vehicle or wait, so good communication is essential. Turn on your cell phone and take it off of airplane mode, so your driver can call or text you. If you don't recognize the number, it's probably your driver.

Terminal 3 Prearranged is across the crosswalk from Door 6 and to the right, south side of the building.

Things You Should Know

Does it make sense to take an Uber or Lyft?

Uber and Lyft drivers often cancel once they arrive at your house in Phoenix or Cottonwood, because the app doesn't tell them where they are going until they arrive at your home. Usually they don't want to drive that far and not get paid for two hours to drive back, or they are unavailable to work for that long. This may result in you missing your flight after 2-3 of them cancel in a row, and they charge you $5 each time for the cancellation. You then try to contact Uber or Lyft over the next week to get a refund, and they don't even have a phone number.

Another thing to consider is that Uber and Lyft drivers are never interviewed, so you may get a depressed guy complaining about his life, a tiny car with no leg room or a creeper. Uber and Lyft also do not train their drivers and PHX is moderately confusing to most people, so they usually have no idea where to go.

How reliable is the Greyhound bus or an Arizona with a lot of people?

Other shuttle companies that do shared rides in Cottonwood will try to pick you up an hour or two earlier, but they make no promises about when you will actually get to PHX. If you're on a tight schedule, the shared ride option with Arizona or the Greyhound is probably not a good idea. Extra stops and scheduling with other passengers can either make you too early or potentially late. Even with great drivers, passengers can be unpredictable and end up making everyone miss their flight.

AZ Shuttle also provides airport shuttle service, but they operate more like a bus leaving you at a gas station, stopping everywhere, and takes a lot longer. Our Cottonwood Shuttle service is non-stop and door - door, so you don't have to worry about being left at a bus stop and having to arrange other transportation.

Phoenix - Cottonwood distance is 103 miles and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get there by car or with us, versus about 3 and a half hours on the bus or another shared ride service.
