Sedona to Surprise Shuttle

Check Rates

Leaving the red‑rock cliffs of Sedona, the ride heads north on SR‑179 through Oak Creek Canyon before joining I‑17 south toward the Phoenix metro area. The highway skirts the Verde River, passes the historic town of Camp Verde, and then opens onto the wide desert basin that surrounds the Valley of the Sun. As the shuttle approaches the west side of the metro, it exits onto Loop 303 and follows the arterial roads that serve Surprise’s neighborhoods — Sun City Grand, Surprise City Center, and the expanding residential corridors near the Loop 303/US‑60 interchange.

The door‑to‑door distance covers roughly 92 miles as the crow flies, with the actual road mileage a little higher. Typical travel time ranges from 126 to 173 minutes depending on traffic around the I‑17/Loop 303 junction and the time of day. A standard sedan accommodating one or two passengers is priced at about $128 one‑way, and the fare includes all tolls and fees for the route.

Drivers are familiar with the pickup points that matter most to travelers: the lobby of your Sedona hotel, a vacation rental in West Sedona, or the curb at the Sedona Airport (SDX) if you’re arriving by air. In Surprise, the shuttle can drop you at a private residence, a business park near the Loop 303 corridor, or the Phoenix Sky Harbor terminals (3 and 4) for connecting flights. The route’s geography — canyon switchbacks, high‑desert plains, and suburban arterials — means the driver chooses the most efficient lane configuration at each stage, avoiding the congestion that often builds near the I‑17/US‑60 split during peak hours.

How long does the trip take?

Expect between 2 hours 6 minutes and 2 hours 53 minutes door‑to‑door, with the exact duration set by real‑time traffic on I‑17 and Loop 303.

Where will the driver meet me in Sedona?

We arrange a specific curb or lobby location when you book — whether it’s a hotel on State Route 89A, a vacation home in Oak Creek, or the Sedona Airport terminal.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Our dispatch monitors incoming flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor and adjusts the pickup time accordingly; the driver will wait for the updated arrival without extra charge.

Sedona to Surprise: Distance, Travel Time, and Route Overview

Traveling between Sedona and Surprise, Arizona covers a stretch of desert highway that connects the iconic red‑rock vistas of the Verde Valley with the growing suburban communities of Maricopa County. According to public route calculations, the two cities are 58.44 miles apart when measured along the most direct driving corridor[1]. If you maintain a steady speed and make no stops, the journey takes approximately 2 hours and 18 minutes behind the wheel[1]. This baseline estimate helps travelers plan departure times, fuel stops, and any scenic detours they might wish to add along the way.

The route primarily follows State Route 179 south from Sedona to Interstate 17, then continues west on State Route 69 before joining US‑60 westbound toward Surprise. Key landmarks along the drive include the historic mining town of Jerome, the sprawling Prescott National Forest, and the outskirts of Cordes Lakes—a small community that sits near the geographic midpoint of the trip. Understanding the basic distance and travel time provides a solid foundation for comparing different transportation methods and estimating associated costs.

Driving from Sedona to Surprise

When you choose to drive yourself, the trip’s fuel consumption and emissions can be estimated from widely available averages. Using the current U.S. average price for regular gasoline ($4.35 per gallon) and the vehicle’s typical fuel efficiency, the projected fuel expense for the 58.44‑mile drive is about $20.42[1]. This figure is an estimate; actual costs will vary based on your car’s miles‑per‑gallon rating, driving habits, and any fluctuations in pump prices.

Environmental impact is another consideration. The same calculation estimates that an average passenger vehicle will release roughly 91.96 pounds of carbon dioxide during the trip, which works out to approximately 0.79 pounds of CO₂ per mile**[1]. These numbers give a clear picture of the trip’s ecological footprint and can help travelers who wish to offset emissions or opt for a lower‑impact mode of transport.

Driving offers the greatest flexibility: you can leave Sedona at any time, make spontaneous stops at scenic overlooks, and adjust your arrival time in Surprise based on traffic conditions. However, it also requires you to navigate the highway, manage fuel stops, and handle parking upon arrival.

Halfway Point and Nearby Landmarks

For those interested in breaking up the drive, the route’s halfway point lies roughly 1 hour and 9 minutes** from either city when traveling at a steady pace[1]. The nearest populated place to this point is Cordes Lakes, Arizona, which sits about 53 miles from Sedona** and 68 miles from Surprise**[1]. Traveling from Sedona to Cordes Lakes takes roughly 1 hour**, while the leg from Surprise to Cordes Lakes is about 1 hour and 10 minutes**[1].

Cordes Lakes offers a few convenient amenities for a quick break, including a gas station, a small café, and access to the Verde River for a short walk. If you prefer a longer pause, the nearby Prescott National Forest** provides trailheads and picnic areas just a short detour off State Route 69. Utilizing the halfway point can make the journey feel less monotonous and gives drivers a chance to stretch, refuel, or check messages before continuing.

Transport Options: Car, Bus, Taxi, Tram

While a personal vehicle is the most common choice, several alternative ways exist to travel between Sedona and Surprise. Each mode presents its own balance of cost, convenience, and travel time.

By Car

Driving provides door‑to‑door service and the ability to carry luggage, outdoor gear, or pets without restriction. As noted, the fuel cost estimate is about $20.42, and the trip takes just over two hours under normal conditions. Rental cars are readily available in Sedona from major agencies and local providers; travelers should book in advance during peak tourist seasons to secure the best vehicle class and rates.

By Bus

Intercity bus services connect larger Arizona cities, but direct routes between Sedona and Surprise are limited. Most passengers will need to travel to a regional hub—such as Phoenix or Prescott—and transfer to a local bus or shuttle that serves Surprise. Bus travel generally offers lower per‑person fares than a private car, though total trip time can increase due to transfers and scheduled stops. Checking the latest timetables for operators like Greyhound or FlixBus (when they serve Arizona) will reveal whether a viable connection exists for your travel dates.

By Taxi or Ride‑Share

Check Rates

Taxi companies and ride‑share platforms operate in both Sedona and the Phoenix metropolitan area, which includes Surprise. A taxi ride offers the convenience of a professional driver who handles navigation and parking, but the fare is typically higher than driving yourself because it incorporates labor, vehicle maintenance, and profit margins. Ride‑share apps may provide price estimates before booking, allowing travelers to compare options in real time. As with any hired vehicle, it is advisable to confirm the driver’s credentials and ensure the vehicle is adequately insured.

By Tram or Light Rail

Arizona currently does not have a tram or light‑rail line that links Sedona directly to Surprise. The Valley Metro Rail system serves Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, and Glendale, but its western terminus does not reach Surprise. Therefore, tram‑based travel would require a combination of rail and other transport modes, making it impractical for a straightforward point‑to‑point trip. Travelers interested in public transit should focus on bus or shuttle alternatives rather than expecting a tram service.

Finding Rental Cars in Sedona

Sedona’s visitor infrastructure includes several nationally recognized rental agencies located near the Sedona‑Flagstaff Airport (also known as Sedona Airport) and in the town center. Local businesses also offer a range of vehicles, from economy cars to SUVs suited for navigating the area’s occasional dirt roads. When reserving a rental, consider the following:

  • Check the rental company’s fuel policy—some require a full‑tank return, while others charge for refueling at a premium rate.
  • Confirm whether unlimited mileage is included; most Arizona rentals offer unlimited miles, which is ideal for the Sedona‑to‑Surprise leg.
  • Inspect the vehicle for any existing damage before driving away and take photos for your records.
  • If you plan to explore Sedona’s red‑rock trails, an SUV or vehicle with higher ground clearance may provide added comfort on unpaved parking areas.

By securing a rental car in Sedona, you retain the ability to leave the vehicle in Surprise or drop it off at a location convenient for your onward travel, such as Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Gas Consumption and Emissions

Understanding the environmental side of a road trip can help travelers make informed choices. The estimate of 91.96 pounds of CO₂** emitted over the 58.44‑mile drive stems from multiplying the average fuel consumption of a midsize sedan (about 25 mpg) by the distance and applying the standard emissions factor for gasoline (approximately 8.887 kg CO₂ per gallon). The resulting per‑mile figure of 0.79 pounds of CO₂** offers a clear metric for comparing alternatives.

If reducing emissions is a priority, consider:

  • Choosing a vehicle with higher fuel economy (e.g., a hybrid or efficient compact).
  • Planning the trip to avoid rush‑hour congestion, which can increase fuel use.
  • Combining the drive with other low‑impact activities, such as carpooling with fellow travelers.
  • Investing in verified carbon‑offset programs that match the estimated emissions for the journey.

Even small adjustments—like maintaining proper tire pressure and removing unnecessary roof racks—can improve mileage and lower the overall carbon footprint of the drive.
