What to Expect on the Tempe to Mesa Gateway Route
The Tempe-to-AZA corridor is one of our busiest East Valley runs. Based on real completed Airport Shuttle of Phoenix trips on this exact route, here is the on-the-ground reality — where in Tempe we pick up, which highway we take and why, what Phoenix-Mesa Gateway looks like compared to Sky Harbor, and tips for a stress-free ride.
Tempe pickup zones we serve
We pick up door-to-door anywhere in Tempe and surrounding ZIPs 85281, 85282, 85283, and 85284. Recent completed bookings on this route come from across the city:
- ASU and downtown Tempe — the Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU (East University Drive), The Westin Tempe on East 7th Street, Mill Avenue hotels and Greek-row pickups, and ASU dorms along Rural and University.
- Tempe Marketplace and the Lakes (85281) — the McClintock / Rio Salado corridor, residential streets off Lakeshore Drive, and hotels along East University.
- South Tempe (85282 / 85283) — Warner, Baseline, Knox, and the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes (Westcourt Way), plus residential pickups along South Priest Drive, South 52nd Street, and the East Southern Avenue corridor.
- Tempe research and business park (85284) — the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Tempe at University Research Park on Price Road, plus office pickups near the I-10 / Elliot interchange.
The road choice: Loop 202 vs US-60 vs Santan
From Tempe there are three practical paths to AZA, and our drivers pick on the day based on live traffic:
- Loop 202 East (Red Mountain) to Santan Loop 202 South, exit Ray Road or Pecos — our default from north and central Tempe (ASU, Mill Avenue, Tempe Marketplace). Smooth off-peak: roughly 28–35 minutes door-to-curb.
- US-60 East (Superstition Freeway) to Power Road or Sossaman — the fallback from South Tempe (Baseline / Warner / Guadalupe) when Loop 202 backs up around the Broadway curve. Adds 3–5 minutes but stays predictable.
- I-10 East to Loop 202 (Santan) South — the choice from the I-10 / Elliot business-park area, since it bypasses the central Tempe surface streets entirely.
For early-morning Allegiant departures (before 6:00 a.m.), Loop 202 is almost always 28–32 minutes; the US-60 alternate is only worth it when live traffic shows a 6+ minute Loop 202 delay.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA) vs Sky Harbor (PHX) — which airport is yours?
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) is the smaller, faster of the metro's two commercial airports and is built around Allegiant Air, which runs the vast majority of AZA's scheduled passenger service. WestJet and Sun Country also use AZA seasonally. If your itinerary is Allegiant, you almost certainly want AZA — not Sky Harbor.
The AZA terminal is a single building at 6033 South Sossaman Road, Mesa, AZ 85212. Check-in to gate is typically 15–25 minutes — security lines are short compared to PHX, but Allegiant's bag-drop cutoff is firm at 45 minutes before departure, so don't cut it closer than that.
If your flight is on American, Southwest, Delta, United, or any international carrier, you almost certainly want our Tempe to Sky Harbor (PHX) shuttle instead — PHX is the Phoenix metro's main hub and sits about 10 miles west of Tempe via Loop 202.
Real pricing on this route
Across recent completed Tempe↔AZA bookings, our sedan (1–2 passengers) flat rate has typically landed between $51 and $85 one-way, with the most common fares clustered in the $60–$75 range depending on the exact pickup address, time of day, and whether you book one-way or round-trip. Three-passenger sedans run roughly $93–$115. Larger groups move in our Large SUV (up to 7 passengers, $95–$155) or a 13-passenger shuttle ($250–$280), both flat-rate at booking. There are no per-mile surge fees and no shared rides — the quote you see at booking is what you pay.
Travel tips for Tempe riders
- Pad 10–15 minutes for weekday rush departures. If your AZA flight departs between 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. on a weekday, request a pickup 15 minutes earlier than the off-peak baseline — Loop 202 around the US-60 / Broadway interchange routinely adds time.
- Early-morning pickups are flat and fast. A 4:30 a.m. pickup for a 6:30 a.m. Allegiant departure is the standard window for Tempe; expect curbside at the AZA terminal by about 5:10.
- Flight tracking is included. If your inbound Allegiant flight to AZA runs late, dispatch shifts the return pickup automatically — no need to call from baggage claim.
- Group bookings are flat-rate. Five to seven passengers in a Large SUV, or eight to thirteen in our shuttle, is almost always cheaper per person than booking two sedans — a common pattern for ASU family travel weekends and small business trips.
- Car seats for children. Arizona law requires safety seats for children under 8 or under 4 feet 9 inches. Request a seat at booking and we will supply one at no surprise charge.
- Round-trip promo. Use promo code ONLINE at booking to save 10% on round trips.
