How long does it take to go from Phoenix or Peoria?

Trips to and from Peoria in normal traffic are about 30 minutes versus an hour on the bus or a shuttle with a bunch of people. Rush hour will normally add 15-45 minutes (30 minutes on the average).

What time should I be picked up?

2 hours before is normally enough time. PHX recommends you to be there 2 hours early to get through security and to your plane. Boarding usually starts 30 minutes before your plane takes off. Overview of the Peoria, AZ to Phoenix, AZ Drive

Traveling from Peoria, Arizona, to downtown Phoenix is a common commuter route for residents, business travelers, and visitors alike. The journey connects two major cities in the Phoenix metropolitan area, linking Peoria’s suburban neighborhoods with the economic and cultural hub of Arizona’s capital. The drive is short enough to be completed in roughly one hour under normal traffic conditions, making it a viable option for day trips, professional meetings, or a quick getaway to the city’s attractions.

Distance and Travel Time

According to mapping data, the driving distance between Peoria and Phoenix is approximately 27 miles (43 km). The reference travel time for this route is about 1 hour and 3 minutes when driving continuously without scheduled stops. Traffic patterns, time of day, and road incidents can affect the actual duration, so travelers should plan for possible delays, especially during rush hours on weekdays. The modeled planning speed used for the estimate is roughly 37 mph (60 km/h), which reflects typical suburban and arterial road speeds in the region.

Primary Routes and Highways

The most direct path follows U.S. Route 60 (US‑60), also known as Grand Avenue, which runs south from Peoria through Glendale and into Phoenix. Alternative routes utilize Interstate 10 (I‑10) combined with Arizona State Route 101 (AZ‑101), creating a loop that can be faster when US‑60 experiences congestion. A third option uses local streets such as Peoria Boulevard transitioning to 43rd Avenue before joining I‑10, providing a middle ground between distance and traffic flow.

Comparison of Route Options

Route Distance (mi) Est. Travel Time Major Roads Key Advantages
US‑60 Direct 27 ~1 hr 3 min US‑60 Shortest distance; minimal turns; passes through Glendale’s retail corridors
I‑10 + AZ‑101 Loop 30 ~1 hr 10 min I‑10, AZ‑101 Higher-speed interstate; scenic view of the Papago Buttes; less exposure to traffic lights
Peoria Blvd → 43rd Ave → I‑10 28 ~1 hr 5 min Local roads, I‑10 Useful when US‑60 is congested; offers access to local services along Peoria Boulevard

All distances and times are modeled estimates based on typical traffic conditions (Source: MapQuest).

Fuel Cost Estimate

The estimated fuel consumption for the 27‑mile trip is roughly 0.9 gallons (3.5 liters) for an average gasoline‑powered vehicle. Using the average U.S. regular gasoline price of $4.35 per gallon, the approximate cost of gasoline for this drive is around $2.36. Keep in mind that fuel prices fluctuate daily, and the actual cost may differ based on your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and the current price at the pump. Electric‑vehicle drivers can estimate energy usage at about 7.9 kWh for the same distance.

Environmental Impact

For a conventional internal‑combustion engine, the trip produces an estimated 10.64 pounds of CO₂ in total emissions, which translates to roughly 0.79 pounds of CO₂ per mile. These figures are based on average emission factors for passenger vehicles in the United States. Choosing a more fuel‑efficient vehicle, carpooling, or using an electric vehicle can help reduce the carbon footprint associated with this commute.

Key Landmarks Along the Way

  • Peoria Sports Complex – Located near the northern end of the route, this venue hosts Major League Baseball spring training and community events.
  • State Farm Stadium (Glendale) – Home of the Arizona Cardinals, this stadium is visible from US‑60 and is a major landmark for sports fans.
  • Desert Ridge Marketplace – A large shopping and dining complex off I‑10, ideal for a quick break or meal.
  • Kierland Commons (Scottsdale) – Situated near the I‑10/AZ‑101 interchange, offering upscale shopping and restaurants.
  • Phoenix Art Museum (Downtown Phoenix) – A cultural stop for those interested in art, located near the southern terminus of the journey.

These attractions provide convenient opportunities to pause and enjoy the local scenery, whether you’re traveling for work or leisure.

Travel Tips and Safety Recommendations

Plan for Peak Traffic Times

Weekday mornings (7:00 am – 9:00 am) and late afternoons (4:30 pm – 6:30 pm) typically see the heaviest congestion on US‑60 and I‑10. If your schedule is flexible, consider traveling outside these windows to reduce travel time.

Check Road Conditions

Arizona’s desert climate can produce sudden weather changes, though they are rare on this urban corridor. Before departing, verify real‑time traffic and road reports via the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) website or mobile app.

Vehicle Readiness

Ensure your vehicle’s tire pressure, fluid levels, and brakes are in good condition, especially if you plan to take the I‑10 segment at higher speeds. Maintaining a full tank or a charged battery will also help avoid unnecessary stops.

Use Navigation Apps

GPS navigation tools can recalculate routes dynamically, guiding you around incidents and bottlenecks. Many apps also display current speed limits and estimated arrival times.

Stay Hydrated

Because the Phoenix metro area experiences high temperatures, especially in summer, carry water for yourself and any passengers to stay comfortable during the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does it take to drive from Peoria, AZ, to Phoenix, AZ?

The reference driving time is about 1 hour and 3 minutes for a nonstop, continuous drive covering roughly 27 miles (43 km). Actual travel time may vary with traffic, weather, and stops.

What is the most fuel‑efficient route?

The US‑60 direct route offers the shortest distance and typically the lowest fuel consumption. However, if traffic is heavy, an alternate route via I‑10 and AZ‑101 may be more efficient because it avoids frequent stops and traffic signals.

Are there any tolls on the Peoria‑to‑Phoenix drive?

The primary roads used for this trip—US‑60, I‑10, and AZ‑101—are toll‑free. There are no toll booths on these segments.

Can I use an electric vehicle for this commute?

Is there a halfway point between Peoria and Phoenix?

The approximate halfway point lies near the intersection of US‑60 and I‑10 in Glendale, roughly 12 minutes from both cities. This area offers several dining and service options for travelers needing a break.

Things You Should Know

Does it make sense to take an Uber or Lyft?

Uber and Lyft drivers often cancel once they arrive at your house in Peoria or Phoenix, because the app doesn't tell them where they are going until they arrive at your home. Usually they don't want to drive that far and not get paid to drive back, or they are unavailable to work for that long. This may result in you missing your flight after 2-3 of them cancel in a row, and they charge you $5 each time for the cancellation. You then try to contact Uber or Lyft over the next week to get a refund, and they don't even have a phone number.

Another thing to consider is that Uber and Lyft drivers are never interviewed, so you may get a depressed guy complaining about his life, a tiny car with no leg room or a creeper. Uber and Lyft also do not train their drivers and Sky Harbor is moderately confusing to most people, so they usually have no idea where to go.

How reliable is the Greyhound bus or an Arizona shuttle with a lot of people?

Other shuttle companies that do shared rides in Peoria will try to pick you up an hour or two earlier, but they make no promises about when you will actually get to PHX. If you're on a tight schedule, the shared ride option with Arizona shuttle or the Greyhound is probably not a good idea. Extra stops and scheduling with other passengers can either make you too early or potentially late. Even with great drivers, passengers can be unpredictable and end up making everyone miss their flight.
