Phoenix Sky Harbor is one of the easier airports in the Southwest to reach by train, because the light rail and the terminals are linked by a free airport train with a covered walkway between them. Here is how the connection actually works.
The two-step connection
Valley Metro Rail runs along Washington Street through downtown Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Get off at 44th Street and Washington, walk the moving-sidewalk walkway on Level 2 and take the elevator or escalator up to the 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station. From there the free Sky Train carries you to the terminals. The whole link is designed for travelers with luggage, and the Sky Train runs around the clock.
Which terminal to use
Sky Harbor has two terminals, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4, and the Sky Train serves both. Check your boarding pass before you get on, because the two terminals are not connected inside security. Riding to the wrong one means a landside ride back on the same train plus a second security screening.
Rail-side logistics
The 44th Street Station is also the eastern access point for airport parking and for people who would rather be picked up or dropped off away from the terminal curb. Short-term parking meters are available at the station. Riders coming from the west side of the metro should note that a separate Sky Train station, 24th Street, sits south of Buckeye Road between Terminal 3 and the Rental Car Center, which can be a faster entry point depending on where you started.
When a shuttle is the better call
Rail works well for solo travelers with light luggage heading to the downtown and Tempe corridor. For early departures, late arrivals, group travel or trips that end away from a rail line, a Sky Harbor airport shuttle is the simpler option. The Tempe shuttle, Phoenix shuttle service and Mesa shuttle pages cover common pickup areas in each part of the Valley.
