Meteor Carter

Meteor Carter is a meteorite impact crater 37 meters east of flagstaff and 18 miles west of Winslow in the desert of Arizona. It got its name from the nearest post office meteor. Meteor Carter is a result of a collision between a piece of an asteroid and a planet. This collision created a giant bowl-shaped cavity which we now call meteor crater.

The Barringer family privately owns this natural landmark, so it is not protected as a national monument. This got designated as a national natural landmark in November 1967. The carter was created about 50,000 years ago. Around the time, the surrounding area was covered by grass and inhabited by mammoths and giant ground sloths. The investigations here have helped scientists discover the secrets of the solar system. It is observed that the rim has lost 50–65 ft. (15–20 m) of height at the rim crest due to natural erosion. The desert has helped in preserving the carter by limiting the corrosion, which would have if not resulted in blurred or erased traces of impact.

The meteoroid that collided weighed 3,00,000 tons and created an impact 150 times more than the force of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Due to the high speed and impact, most of the meteoroids melted. You can experience the live vision in an air-conditioned indoor visiting area through a self-guided trail or guided tour along the rim.

Collision! 4D theater

This room is created to give you the 4D experience of the flight mission-based journey. This theater provides you with an immense experience with special effects and full-motion seats. For the trip to begin, you'll have to pass through a biometric hand scanner for clearance and sit back to fly.

Guided Rim Tour

This tour gives you a guided journey. You can watch the uplift in the borders, a land of sandstone and limestone. The side wall is 250 feet above their pre-impact levels. This is the best virtual learning amongst the natural wonders.

Impact: The Mystery of Meteor Crater

This is a movie that takes you through the journey of the space events like meteoroids in our case, and their history and the events that resulted in the change of course of these meteoroids. And lead to such an impact on the earth.

All this is to help you understand the natural courses that take place beyond earth. So take your time and visit the natural landmark. Arizona shuttle is at your service 24/7.
